A fascinating, non-partisan exploration of an incendiary regionSay the word “Israel” today and it sparks images of walls and rockets and a bloody conflict without end. Yet for decades, the symbol of the Jewish State was the noble pioneer draining the swamps and making the deserts bloom: the legendary kibbutznik. So what ever happened to the pioneers’ dream of founding a socialist utopia in the land called Palestine?Chasing Utopia: The Future of the Kibbutz in a Divided Israel draws readers into the quest for answers to the defining political conflict of our era. Acclaimed author David Leach revisits his raucous memories of life as a kibbutz volunteer and returns to meet a new generation of Jewish and Arab citizens struggling to forge a better future together. Crisscrossing the nation, Leach chronicles the controversial decline of Israel’s kibbutz movement and witnesses a renaissance of the original vision for a peaceable utopia in unexpected corners of the Promised Land. Chasing Utopia is an entertaining and enlightening portrait of a divided nation where hope persists against the odds.

While Thomas More first coined the word utopia in his 1516 book of the same name, the concept of a near perfect society dates at least back to the period of classical antiquity. Plato's "The Republic" is often cited as one of earliest attempts at addressing just such a society. However in the 16th century Thomas More's work established itself as the most famous example of this genre of literature. More's "Utopia" is described as an idealized island community upon which perfect social harmony has been achieved, all property is community owned, violence is nonexistent and everyone has the opportunity to work and live in an environment of religious tolerance. Along with this work "Three Early Modern Utopias" also includes Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis" and Henry Neville's "The Isle of Pines." Bacon's work, which appears over a century after Utopia, also concerns a utopian island which is happened upon by the crew of a European ship. On Bacon's mythical island of Bensalem, "generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendor, piety and public spirit" are the commonly held qualities of its inhabitants. Neville's work follows a similar construct as Bacon's when five people are shipwrecked on the idyllic "Isle of Pines." These three early works help to define an entire genre of literature and greatly influenced the work of the many authors who followed in their footsteps.

A more cooperative world is possible. If we were to put the entire history of humankind into a 24-hour-day, it would only be in the past couple minutes that civilization has looked like this. Pollution. Exploitation. Isolation. Disparity. Symptoms of a society out of control, and certainly not one that was designed to last. But what if we could live differently? It turns out, more than 100,000 people already are, in ecovillages, cohousing, communes, and communities of all kinds around the world. They're working together to create fair, sustainable, and satisfying models of society. How can you find intentional communities? The answer is the Communities Directory -- an online and printed catalog of intentional communities in the US, and all over the planet. For 25 years the Fellowship for Intentional Community (FIC) has been building, innovating, and keeping this catalog fresh. A book to find the community that suits you!In addition to profiling more than 1,000 communities, the book includes full-page maps showing where communities are located, charts that compare communities by more than 30 different qualities, and an easy index to find communities interested in specific pursuits.
